Pieter Hugo is a South African-based photographer who’s won loads of prestigious awards. Hugo has some very interesting albums including Messina/Musina and Rwanada 2004; however the one that I found most remarkable was ‘The Hyena and Other Men‘.

This collection of photos portrays the Hyena Handlers in Lagos, Nigeria. This group of men are street performers that walk around with chained hyenas to make money and sell traditional medicine. The photographs are striking. The connection that the men have with these hyenas is wild; the hyenas themselves are huge beasts. I always had the impression that they were the size of a domestic dog. But these ones are big…really big.
